ABC's hit TV show Shark Tank pits inventors and small-business hopefuls against one another to battle for investment dollars in front of a panel of ruthless judges. Here in Colorado, the concept has been translated into something a little less, well, cutthroat. The Metro Denver Small Business Development Center is calling its version Trout Tank, and it is putting on the event  four times a year to give local entrepreneurs a shot at funding for their clever ideas. This fall the organization, a branch of the Metro Denver Chamber of Commerce, is teaming with Mission Yogurt to host Trout Tank: Food Frenzy, the first industry-specific edition, which will give food and restaurant aspirants a chance to "move their business from a dream to a reality,” according to SBDC director Abram Sloss. »Read the Westword article here.

The town of Kremmling, Kremmling Area Chamber of Commerce, Northwest Council of Governments and Northwest Small Business Development Centers (SBDC) are pleased to announce a joint partnership that will bring the SBDC’s experience and resources to Kremmling. 

The Northwest SBDC team is opening a satellite office in the Kremmling Visitor’s Center. The Kremmling Chamber’s executive director, Christine Mahorney, is becoming a certified business consultant, and will serve as a co-host of the program and as an onsite resource.

“This is an exciting opportunity for both current and prospective business owners in West Grand county,” Mahorney said. “We hope business owners will take advantage of the deep resources that will be available through the SBDC.”

The SBDC helps businesses achieve their goals by providing free, confidential counseling and various training programs.

“We are just getting started but already we have created strong partnerships with business throughout Grand County. We can’t wait to meet more,” said Lindsey Stapay, NW SBDC director.

The SBDC combines information and resources from federal, state and local governments with those of the educational system and the private sector to meet the specialized and complex needs of the small business community. Regulatory, management, financial and marketing experts work in partnership to provide entrepreneurs with crucial information that can mean the difference between success and failure.

DENVER - Mon., Feb. 10, 2014 - The Colorado Small Business Development Center Network (SBDC) held their graduation and business plan awards ceremony on Thurs. Feb. 6, 2014 at the Governor's Mansion. Over 25 graduates were recognized, and prizes were award to graduates with the top business plans.

The Leading Edge program delivers comprehensive training to small businesses by providing entrepreneurs with a better understanding of starting and operating a small business. The program has courses geared to help both start-up and existing businesses in the areas of finance, marketing, management and more. The program is offered statewide and over 3,000 businesses have participated in this intensive, specialized training series since the program's inception in 1989. All participants graduate from the program with a completed business plan in hand.

As recently as 2011, the Greater Colorado Springs Chamber of Commerce stood on its own two feet nurturing existing businesses in the region.
